Inaugurated in June 2001, the Heart of Maputo Institute is the result of a collaboration of 5 non-governmental organizations: Cadeia da esperança (Portugal), Chain of Hope (United Kingdom), Coeur pour tous (Switzerland), Codev (France), and "La Chaine de l'Espoir".

The Institute offers 2 operating suites, cardiology intervention equipement, 20 beds, 1 x-ray room, 1 laboratory, 1 pharmacy.

It enable 300 surgeries and 10.000 consultations per year.

In 2006, a research center dedicated to cardiac diseases was created.
