Budget emergency: children’s operations cancelled for lack of funding
Historic budget cuts
Following the abrupt halting of major international funding and the announcement in France of a 2.1 billion euro reduction in the budget allocated to official development assistance (-37%), the humanitarian sector has been severely weakened.
The fragility of the situation is all the greater given that these budget cuts are taking place against an extremely complex backdrop of multiplying crises and, by extension, humanitarian needs.
A direct impact on our patients
As far as our actions are concerned, the consequences of these budget cuts are already being felt:
- In Jordan, our orthopedic surgery program has ground to a halt, and 366 children were unable to undergo surgery this year,
- In Afghanistan, needs are growing by the day following a series of earthquakes at the end of August, with many injured requiring urgent care.
Beyond the vital emergency, international aid must help rebuild and empower healthcare systems, to create lasting conditions for a dignified life and limit the tragedies of exile.
Our action plan for the rest of the year
In 2024, 58% of our resources will come from the generosity of the general public. To maintain our commitments in our various countries of intervention despite the drop in this funding, we need to raise at least €800,000. This will enable us to :
- Guarantee operations for 200 seriously ill children,
- Reschedule 20 medical missions originally planned,
- Helping the wounded in Afghanistan and maintaining access to vital care,
- Train 200 healthcare professionals to strengthen local autonomy in the long term.
Every donation counts. You can help us to care for, protect and give hope to children waiting for surgery.
