A look back at the 2nd World Pain andALR Day
Live demonstration
Organized on the initiative of the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Therapy (ESRA), the event featured a live demonstration of loco-regional anesthesia (LRA) by Dr. Xavier Raingeval, intensive care anesthetist, volunteer with La Chaîne de l’Espoir and member of ESRA France.
In fact, thanks to the hybrid format proposed for this 2nd ALR and Pain Day, this demonstration went beyond borders, benefiting 128 Burkinabe doctors and anesthesia technicians gathered at a congress held in parallel in their country.
Multiple success stories
This testifies to the success of the ALR training courses set up by Dr. Xavier Raingeval in Burkina Faso, marked by 4 missions carried out between 2021 and 2024, as well as the numerous scientific publications on ALR that have emerged as a result of the training courses.
One example is Dr Ismaël Guilda’s publication on analgesia with locoregional anaesthesia after Caesarean section compared with the current standard in a randomized controlled trial.
All these positive elements illustrate the relevance and effectiveness of distance learning and interaction between the various ALR players.
In January and February 2025, Dr. Xavier Raingeval was at the Centre National Hospitalier Universitaire Hubert Koutoukou MAGA (CNHU-HKM) in Cotonou, then at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sylvanus Olympio (CHU SO) in Lomé for the 1st humanitarian mission to Benin and the 3rd humanitarian mission to Togo to provide training in ultrasound-guided ALR. This new mission to the CHU SO brought together 16 anesthetists, including 5 from Côte d’Ivoire, and 20 senior anesthesia and intensive care technicians from 4 private facilities and 8 Togolese public hospitals.
