International Nurses Day 2025

Every year, International Nurses' Day is celebrated on May 12, in tribute to Florence Nightingale, the British pioneer of modern nursing, who was born on June 12, 1820. At La Chaîne de l'Espoir, this day has a special significance because nurses, whether volunteers or professionals trained by us, play an essential role in children's access to healthcare.

Nurses’ Day: what theme for 2025?

As in previous years, this year’s International Nurses’ Day has its own theme: ” Our nurses. Our future. Taking care of nurses boosts savings “.

With this theme, the International Council of Nurses, a federation of national nursing associations, is focusing on the well-being of this essential healthcare professional. In other words, the health and job satisfaction of nurses are vital not only to the quality of care they provide, but also to the robustness of healthcare systems and the economy in general.

International Nurses’ Day: what role for La Chaîne de l’Espoir?

Whether as volunteers for our association or as healthcare professionals trained during our missions, the nurses make a significant contribution to the medical care of children suffering from a wide range of pathologies (cardiac, orthopedic, neurological, etc.).

One example is Nepal. In this country, volunteer nurses from La Chaîne de l’Espoir have carried out long-term missions. The aim of these missions was to train and pass on their skills to their Nepalese counterparts, who work in 36 school-based health centers and several regional centers in Kathmandu that we manage in partnership with the local NGO Child Protection Centers and Services (CPCS).

Another example is our hospitalized children program (AEH ), which enables hospitalized children to be accompanied individually by one of our volunteers when they find themselves alone. A health executive for 10 years and a nursery nurse for 30 years at Hospices civils de Lyon (HCL), Geneviève Michel describes the impact of this program: ” Its impact is very positive in all departments! It’s a topic at every management meeting “. In fact, the AEH program benefits all parties involved, bringing ” relief to the medical and paramedical teams ” as well as to ” parents, who are less exhausted and therefore more receptive to their children “. Last but not least, the children are naturally the first to benefit from the positive impact of this individualized support: ” It’s a joy for little patients who are alone, especially at weekends. And Geneviève Michel concludes: ” The regular schedule of volunteers, scheduled according to care needs and, if necessary, visits, gives comfort to the nursing team and a relationship of trust with the children.
