World Refugee Day 2023: raising awareness and taking action

Discover La Chaîne de l'Espoir's actions in favor of refugees.

World Refugee Day: background and purpose

World Refugee Day is celebrated every year on June 20. Created by the United Nations in 2001, it aims to raise public awareness of the plight of millions of people forced to flee their homeland as a result of armed conflict, persecution or, more broadly, violations of their rights. It also aims to highlight the courage and resilience of refugee populations in their quest for protection, health and security.

La Chaîne de l’Espoir’s action to help refugees

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a program of the United Nations (UN), has drawn up a sad balance sheet showing that there will be 108.4 million refugees or forcibly displaced people in the world by the end of 2022, a figure that is constantly rising.

Refugees are often vulnerable people who also need access to healthcare. This is why La Chaîne de l’Espoir provides medical aid to refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Afghanistan.

In Lebanon, early detection activities for orthopedic anomalies began in 2022 and pediatricians have been trained, in partnership with two local associations, Caritas Liban and Arc-en-Ciel. Thanks to this program, many of Lebanon’s most vulnerable Syrian refugee children have already benefited from treatment. At the Harika center in Beirut, refugee children can receive orthopedic treatment for various conditions such as brachial plexus lesions, metatarsus varus or club feet. Thanks to the provision of adapted orthopedic splints and shoes, these children can benefit from daily treatment to improve their condition.

As in Lebanon, many refugee families are living in Jordan to escape the war in Syria. In September 2022, La Chaîne de l’Espoir launched a new project, in partnership with various Jordanian civil society organizations, for the next three years. Objectives: to improve access to care and strengthen the capacities of the Jordanian healthcare system in the comprehensive care of children with disabilities or at risk of disability due to congenital orthopedic conditions. This project benefits Syrian refugee children in particular, but also the most vulnerable Jordanian children.

Displaced by the return of the Taliban in 2021, or Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan, many children in Afghanistan are in need of care. This is why La Chaîne de l’Espoir is stepping up its efforts to care for children at the Institut Médical Français pour la Mère et l’Enfant (IMFE) in Kabul. With the support of La Chaîne de l’Espoir, IMFE aims to ensure that displaced children and Afghan refugees benefit from adequate medical care and appropriate treatment. We set up comprehensive care programs covering a wide range of medical needs, from emergency care to complex surgery. And we have also opened a renutrition unit for severely malnourished children.

Together, we can help refugee children around the world gain access to quality healthcare!
