Our projects for 2019

2019, a year full of projects

Treat and train

Treatment of children in France

In 2019, La Chaîne de l’Espoir pursues its original activity: bring to France children with congenital and rheumatic heart diseases for surgery in the largest French Teaching Hospitals.

Regional transfers in West Africa

La Chaîne de l’Espoir will transfer sick children in the reference hospitals in West Africa, such as the Cuomo Centre for Paediatric Cardiology in Dakar, Senegal, the André Festoc Centre in Bamako, Mali, and the Salam Center of Khartoum in Sudan - for Chadian children - with the support of Emergency, our Italian partner.

New regional branch

With the opening of a branch in La Réunion, La Chaîne de l’Espoir will include 21 regional branches. That branch will receive Malagasy children for closed-heart surgeries first and then open-heart surgeries at the Félix Guyon of St-Denis.

New programme to support children hospitalised in France

La Chaîne de l'Espoir will accompany hospitalised children who are isolated. Some hundred volunteers take turns at the bedside of about one hundred children suffering from various pathologies and requiring a long hospital stay. To know more about the new programme to support hospitalised children.

Strengthening of the FMIC and of the Children’s Pavilion

La Chaîne de l’Espoir will continue to bring its expertise to the French Medical Institute for Children & Women of Kabul. Support for the development of cardiac and ophthalmic surgery for a wider audience (adults) will be provided to the FMIC as part of an activity development strategy.

Regarding the Children’s Pavilion, the reception of women from remote areas will be strengthened.

Burkina Faso

Management of noma sequelae

In 2019, a prevention and awareness component on noma will be presented to families and communities to raise awareness on the first symptoms.

As part of the training of the local teams, two surgical missions are scheduled. The children operated on during these missions will be welcomed in a rest home provided by our local partner before and after the operations.

Heart surgery in Cambodia

The two annual missions of heart surgery support will be renewed at the Calmette Hospital in Phnom-Penh.

Consultations and operations for sick and poor children will continue to be covered by La Chaîne de l’Espoir.

Medical and surgical care

In Iraq, in 2019, the teams of La Chaîne de l’Espoir will continue to provide medical and surgical care to northern Iraqi vulnerable populations, including displaced, refugee and host communities.

Support missions for the management of the Semmel and Bardarash Hospitals in Iraqi Kurdistan are planned for 2019.

Early detection and treatment of orthopaedic congenital malformations

In Jordan, La Chaîne de l'Espoir will continue to strengthen access to medical and surgical care for vulnerable children (refugees and Jordanians) living with heart and orthopaedic conditions.

In order to improve the quality of patient care, psychosocial support has been put in place. An early detection and treatment component for orthopaedic congenital malformations is also being developed by La Chaîne de l'Espoir.

This programme is financed by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).

Paediatric orthopaedic and cardiac surgery

La Chaîne de l’Espoir, with the support of the Crisis and Support Centre of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is continuing its programme of access to paediatric orthopaedic medical and surgical care for vulnerable children (refugees and Lebanese).

The objective is to treat more children living with congenital disorders and to implement the same early detection component for congenital malformations as in Jordan.

Reconstructive surgery

In view of the success of the programme to support the development of reconstructive surgery, which has enabled approximately 170 children to be treated, La Chaîne de l'Espoir will continue in 2019 to support reconstructive surgery at HMEL, in partnership with NEW FACE, for the recruitment and post-operative medical follow-up of children undergoing surgery.

Cardiopaediatric surgery

Training missions for the medical team of the André Festoc Centre for Paediatric Cardiology, opened in September 2018, will continue at a rate of two missions per month in the first half of the year and one mission per month in the second half.

Training in cardiopaediatric surgery

In 2019, La Chaîne de l'Espoir will continue its training programme in Madagascar to detect and identify heart diseases, as well as to train the medical staff of the Soavinandriana Hospital Centre (CENHOSOA) in open and closed heart surgery.

Cardiopaediatric surgery missions will take place during the year thanks to a team from La Chaîne de l'Espoir of the Reunion branch.

Training leading to a diploma in paediatric nursing

The training programme leading to a diploma in paediatric nursing will be continued in 2019 with the funding of the AFD (French development agency).

La Chaîne de l’Espoir will continue to develop the neonatology, anaesthesiology and school health subspecialties, in addition to general specialisation.

Development of the Cuomo Centre for Paediatric Cardiology in Dakar

In 2019, the objective is to increase the activity of the Cuomo  Centre for Paediatric Cardiology by taking care of about 300 children.

The Children's Pavilion will continue to welcome sick children from the West African region when they are transferred and treated at the Cuomo Centre.

Itinerant missions in Togo

In Togo, two mobile surgical missions, also called itinerant missions, are planned for 2019, as well as our renewed support for the development of neurosurgery at the Sylvanus Olympio Teaching Hospital in Lomé, Togo.

In 2019, training in visceral surgery, urology and neurosurgery will be provided.

Urological surgery

Two missions in urology will be organised with the Hubert Koutoukou Maga National Hospital and University Centre (CNHU) and the Lagune Mother & Child Teaching Hospital (CHUMEL).

Reconstructive surgery

In Benin, La Chaîne de l'Espoir wishes to continue its support for the development of the severe burns unit of the CNHU with the organisation of two training and care missions.

Itinerant missions, practical training for students of the Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma (PSD)

In view of the success of the first itinerant surgery mission in 2018, other similar missions are planned for 2019.

Management of caustic stenosis in West Africa

In 2019, training and management missions of caustic oesophageal stenosis are planned in Mali, in partnership with the Mali Hospital, and in the Ivory Coast, in partnership with the Mother and Child Hospital of Bingerville.

A prevention component at the heart of La Chaîne de L'Espoir's actions

A programme to prevent and raise awareness of accidental ingestions of caustic soda will be developed in these two countries with the support of the Red Cross of the Ivory Coast and the Terre des Hommes Foundation Lausanne in Mali.

Basic surgery

In 2019, La Chaîne de l'Espoir plans to set up a pilot project for training in basic surgery in Chad.

The objective is to train non-surgical doctors working in isolated districts in simple and inexpensive surgical procedures that can save many lives.
