Benin : Education Programme

In Benin, where the poverty of the population, the deficiency of schools and the shortage of qualified teachers are all obstacles to education, the need is significant. Faced with this alarming situation, La Chaîne de l’Espoir launched a programme in 2011 in aid of the education of disadvantaged children in the area around Hévié. In partnership with a Beninese NGO, Bien-Etre et Développement (B.E.D.), La Chaîne de l’Espoir intervenes in 3 schools for pupils enrolled in primary or secondary education.
OBJECTIVES :
- To give destitute children access to a quality education
- To perpetuate their education
- To improve their health
ACTIVITY :
- Educational assistance in kind
To ensure that families do not sacrifice the education of their children for financial reasons, in-kind assistance is offered to sponsored children. [NRD lien vers la page Sponsor a Child]
The objective of annual distribution of school bags, school supplies and uniforms is to fulfil their basic educational needs. It also contributes to local development by commissioning local craftspeople to sew uniforms.
- Food aid
Many children suffer from malnutrition which is detrimental to their health and thus has consequences for the progression of their educations. To respond to this need, sponsored pupils benefit from care packages of food which are distributed several times a year.
- Development and provision of educational institutions with educational materials
Schools with few financial resources are in desperate need of furnishings and educational materials. This total deprivation degrades the quality of education. To place children in the most favourable learning conditions, la Chaîne de l’Espoir implements projects in schools.
Since beginning this programme, La Chaîne de l’Espoir has furnished two primary schools with desks, benches and educational materials for two nursery school classes at one of the same establishments.
