Afghanistan : Education Programme

Programme Coordinator: Sophie Rollin and On-site Coordinators: Kate Rowlands and Najeebullah Samadi

Active in the healthcare sector in Afghanistan since 2001, La Chaîne de l’Espoir began supporting girls’ education in 2008 in the northeast of the country. The education of young girls is an important issue not only on the individual level but also for future generations. In fact, the instruction of mothers plays an important role in the education and health of their children.

OBJECTIVES :

- To provide access to quality education to young Afghan women
- To perpetuate their education
- To improve their health

ACTIVITY :

  • Renovation, construction and development of schools

In Afghanistan, the insufficient number and poor condition of schools constitutes an obstacle to education. This activity is the first step of La Chaîne de l’Espoir’s intervention and is paramount in fostering access to education for girls and guaranteeing good conditions in the learning environment. Four schools have been renovated and developed since 2008 in multiple districts of Panjshir Province. A fifth was constructed and equipped in the most remote and disadvantaged area of the valley. The schools were also supplied with educational materials.

  • Educational assistance in kind

In schools of intervention, school bags, school supplies, shoes and uniforms are distributed each year. This material support is essential in encouraging and perpetuating the education of young Afghan girls for whom poverty increases their vulnerability.

  • Preventative healthcare

To support the acquisition of basic good hygiene, hygiene kits (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.) are distributed in these same establishments in conjunction with outreach designed to raise awareness.
