Best practices to promoteaccess to specialized surgical care

Maxillofacial pathologies: poorly understood and poorly treated in Burkina Faso

In the poorest countries, access to necessary medical and surgical care is extremely difficult due to remoteness, lack of medical infrastructure and financial constraints. Conditions that would be treated at the very beginning in developed countries, grow to the point of being life-threatening. The consequence for many is a life marked by disability, exclusion and sometimes even death.
For example, disfiguring tumors often start out as small excrescences, but without treatment, can develop to the point of becoming fatal, as they prevent the person from breathing or eating and turn their victims into pariahs.

In response to this problem, La Chaîne de l’Espoir has initiated the “Projet de prévention et de prise en charge intégrée des enfants souffrant du noma et de pathologies et malformations faciales au Burkina Faso”, whose intervention logic is presented in the study.
