Jordan: cardiac and orthopaedic surgery

The actions of La Chaîne de l’Espoir in Jordan started in November 2012. The missions of La Chaîne de l’Espoir primarily focus on Syrian refugee children but also address the needs of Jordanian children meeting our vulnerability criteria.

Jordan is one of the countries most affected by the Syrian conflict, currently considered the second highest refugee-hosting country per capita, with 89 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants.

CURRENT SITUATION:

More than 83 percent of refugees in Jordan live outside of camps; 86 percent live below the poverty line. In the face of an economic decline and funding cuts, many refugee families in the country struggle to access basic and specialized health services. Poverty levels have recently increased by 38 percent among Jordanians and 18 percent among Syrian refugees.

Over 5.6 million refugees have fled Syria since 2011, seeking safety in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and beyond. After almost ten years of war in Syria, refugee vulnerabilities and poverty are on the rise, the impact on host communities continues to grow, and funding for the humanitarian response is not keeping up with the needs.

CDE INTERVENTION:

CDE has been active in Jordan since 2012 and focuses on providing pediatric health care for Syrian and vulnerable Jordanian children, training the Jordanian Ministry of Health staff on Congenital Anomalies detection and its care, as well as community awareness-raising on the CA risk factors. CDE also provides cross-cutting programmatic PSS support to children living with impairment and their families. In 2018, an Early Detection campaign's prong was also integrated into CDE programming to strengthen CDE's preventive scope of intervention in Jordan.

Thereby, CDE works to strengthen access to pediatric care for children living with congenital impairment - cardiac and orthopedic - of which more than 3 000 children have benefited from medical and surgical care within CDE's programming since 2016. Our activities encompass critical emergency response regarding cardiac surgical care and sustainable long-term solutions through CDE’s localization approach in five governorates across the Kingdom.
