Caen...Phnom Penh : an example of international medical cooperation

Caen CHU medical specialists have widely participated in the training of their Cambodian counterparts.

Monthly missions have been organised from Cambodia via La Chaîne de l’Espoir by Dr Gérard Babatasi, thus creating a true international cooperation.

Dr. Babatasi, head of the cardiac surgery department of Caen CHU has developed a training cycle for Cambodian doctors in agreement with the CHU General Management and the Agence Régionale de Soins (regional care agency) on the one hand, and Calmette Hospital and the Cambodian authorities on the other hand, by allocating “associated interns” positions in his department. Two cardiac surgeons and one anaesthetist-resuscitator have benefited from a long-term internship at Caen CHU.

Quite recently, a third young surgeon aged 29, Dr Nak Samnong joined Caen CHU for a one-year professional training in mini invasive surgery and repair of mitral valves.

In Cambodia, there are more than 1,500 children waiting for an operation which could save them.

La Chaîne de l’Espoir covers the costs of 10 to 15 child surgeries per month as well as the training of interns in France.
